The straddle carrier driver evacuation flat that the technical department of DP World Antwerp developed last year has been selected as the best innovative safety feature for 2017 by the DP World Group
The global terminal operator has awarded the Antwerp invention its "Global Safety & Environment Awards for Excellence," from of a total 56 entries submitted by group companies throughout the world.
This novel safety device was first reported by WorldCargo News in March 2017. It is attached to the twistlocks of another straddle carrier and allows medical staff and other rescue workers fast and easy horizontal access to a driver in need in his cabin, high up.
The rescue is further smoothed by the possibility to remove the troubled driver’s cab windshield, instead of having to get him out via the railings, cabin door and stairway.Whether on a stretcher or not, the driver can now be moved to ground zero level the lo-lo way by the rescue straddle carrier.
Expressing his gratitude for the global prize, Tom Mortelmans, DP World Antwerp HSSE director, paid special tribute to Werner Peeters of the Deurganckdok terminal’s technical department, who is one of the evacuation flat’s main creators.
