ContainerWeight claims to have mapped the tare weights of 99% of the global fleet of shipping containers.
ContainerWeight will be launching its new database at the forthcoming Intermodal Conference and Exhibition in Rotterdam next month. The company is promising a “reliable and complete database of tare weights and container size type codes.” It is offering an API to connect to the database, which would make the tare weight of any box available immediately after a request for a specific container number from within a connected application. The tare weight can be used by a shipper or other party when calculating the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of a container pursuant to Method 2 under the IMO SOLAS regulation on container weights.
After the VGM requirement came into effect in 2016, the BIC (Bureau International des Containers) developed the “BoxTech Global Container Database” of container data, including tare weights, by seeking agreement with carriers and other fleet owners to upload their data. At last count BoxTech held details of some 11 million containers, around 45% of the global fleet.
ContainerWeight is claiming to have >99% of the global fleet on its database. Speaking to WorldCargo News, co-founder and CEO Jasper Nagtegaal said the company obtained its data through a partnership agreement with Hutchison Ports. This gave it access to “millions” of recent photos of container doors taken at Hutchison’s terminal’s worldwide. “We have analysed those photos through an extensive, software-assisted process and extracted tare weights in kg/lb and Iso size/type codes. So our data is purely fact-based”.
ContainerWeight’s launch customer is the freight forwarder Flexport, and Nagtegaal added that both it and ContainerWeight have validated the data using “extensive back-tests with actual, global shipper data, which have proven the 99% consistently.”
ContainerWeight is launching the new database at the Intermodal Exhibition on Tuesday, 6 November at 11.00am.
