Dachser deploys gigaliners in Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, Dachser recently started circulating two 25.25m long gigaliners on its daily route between its branches in Ostrava and Brno

This will increase capacity on the route while at the same time freeing up one conventional vehicle, as two gigaliners replace three 16.5m long artics.

 

Taking this step became possible with the Czech government’s recent decision to allow longer truck combinations, and so transportation companies can now apply for permits for certain routes.

The almost 170-km stretch between Ostrava and Brno meets these requirements perfectly, says Dachser, and helps it further optimise its transport network in the Czech Republic.

 

The longer truck offers room for 104 pallets in two trailers. Deploying the two trucks will increase capacity on the route by 40%, and only the two longer trucks will be used every day instead of three conventional ones.

 

Dachser already uses longer trucks in other European countries as well, such as Germany, Sweden, and Spain. Currently, their deployment is limited by regulations that vary from country to country, and also do not provide for use across national borders.

 

Dachser’s move follows a recent decision by the Czech authorities to allow gigaliners on certain designated routes. Maximum gross load for the 25.25m long rigs is 48 tons. The permits cost CZK6,000 (€230), are of 3-month duration, and are open for renewable. The point of loading or discharging must be no further than 10 kms to the nearest autobahn and the linking road cannot have a rail crossing. More stringent terms apply for operations near the capital city, Prague.
