Dunkirk posts strong growth in first trimester

In March the port handled 5.22 Mt, the closest the port has come to its monthly record of 5.29 Mt handled in April 2008, before the global economic crisis.

In the first quarter, throughput at the LNG terminal came to 1.25 Mt, the same as for the whole of 2018, which was the terminal’s first full year. Up to the end of March the terminal received 18 calls by LNG carriers.

In the dry bulk sector, grain traffic came to 0.5 Mt, 45% ahead of Q1 2018. Throughput of other "small bulks" handled in the Eastern Port increased by 17%.

In the West Port, at the start of March the container terminal handled its biggest container exchange to date, 5,700 TEU, with the call of CMA CGM BLERIOT.

Emmanuelle Verger, recently appointed Chairman of the Port of Dunkirk, commented that the good results confirm the validity of the new economic model adopted by the port and the efficacy of strategic investments in the 2014-18 five-year budget. She noted that lo-lo container traffic has been on an upward trend since 2013.
