Weserport, the joint venture of Rhenus Group and ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH, uses the crane in Terminal 1 in the Industriehafen for handling general cargo and handling project loads
Gottwald has previously supplied hybrid drive MHCs, but the new drive concept, first disclosed early this year incorporates Konecranes’ hybrid technology, which includes a new 625 kW diesel engine in addition to ultracaps for short-term energy storage and recycling.
The drive was a highlight of the Konecranes stand at TOC Europe 2018.
Weserport Bremen is the first customer for a MHC with the new hybrid drive. Its new crane is a Model 6 in the G HMK 6507 two-rope variant, with a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tons and a radius of up to 51m. This capacity is more than twice that of an old portal slewing crane at the terminal, thus opening up new avenues of business.
It is mainly handling steel and breakbulk cargo at Weserport, but is also due to be used to handle heavy goods and containers in future. By using a motorised grab, it is also possible to move bulk commodities.
"The robust design and reliability, but also the price/performance ratio and the rapid availability of the newly acquired crane were persuasive arguments for us," said Heiner Delicat, Managing Director, Weserport. "A Gottwald crane from the previous generation at Terminal 4 has given reliable service over many years.
"We have opted for a highly productive and eco-efficient crane with a new-generation drive system. Our crane operators received training from Konecranes in Düsseldorf to exploit the crane’s full potential. They value the crane’s performance and its user-friendliness."
In its new drive concept for Gottwald MHCs, Konecranes combines, depending on the crane model, Volvo Penta 625 kW diesel engines with one or more 125 kW ultracap modules. The new concept, which includes optional SCR exhaust technology, thus meets not only US EPA Tier 4f emission standards, but also the requirements of EU Stage V.
