Green light for new container terminal in Sines

Sines Port Authority (APS) has revealed that the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) has given a conditional approval for the expansion of PSA’s Terminal XXI container handling operation and also for construction of the new Vasco da Gama container terminal

The new facility will be part of an international public tender, although several Chinese groups have already been acknowledged to have indicated an interest.

 

Sines is already Portugal’s leading container port and once again resulted in Terminal XXI breaking all established throughput records in 2018. the port now handles 58% of all Portuguese maritime cargo.

 

With the expansion of one box terminal and the building of a second, Sines’ container capacity will effectively be doubled, although at a cost of €1.14B.

 

  • In an interview with the Lusa press agency, Ana Paula Vitorino, Portugal’s Minister of the Sea, commended the recently announced developments at the Port of Leixões. She was referring to investment of €43.4M pledged by Yilport to extend existing infrastructure at the South Container Terminal. Container throughput at Leixões grew by 8% last year to 668,000 TEU, forcing installations to work well above installed capacity. Under the new plans, the South Container Terminal will add capacity of 210,000 TEU annually.
