IDENTEC for DP World Callao

IDENTEC SOLUTIONS has won a contract to install its reefer monitoring system at DP World’s terminal in Callao, Peru.

IDENTEC for DP World Callao

DP World’s terminal in Callao is handling around 1.2M TEU annually, which includes 65,000 to 75,000 reefer containers, a number that is expected to grow as Peru develops its reefer exports.

To manage the increasing reefer traffic DP World has opted to install a remote reefer monitoring system, and selected IDENTEC’s CTAS reefer product. The CTAS system is designed to work wirelessly, with a monitoring unit (pictured) that connects to the reefer container serial port and can send data through RFID and WiFi networks. With a two-way connection to the reefer controller users can monitor temperature, adjust set points, perform automated pre-trip inspections (PTIs) and download data logs remotely.

DP World Callao identified three main reasons for selecting IDENTEC for this project. Firstly, the terminal uses the Navis N4 TOS, and CTAS Reefer has Navis Ready certification for connecting to and exchanging data with N4. IDENTEC’s Julian Galvis, Vice President, Marine and Ports, notes that Navis has kept the interface to reefer monitoring systems consistent over different versions of N4, and integration with N4 enables DP World Callao to manage the reefer monitoring process from with its TOS.

Secondly, the ability to install and connect the hardware wirelessly was an advantage for DP World Callao. It means CTAS can be installed relatively quickly, and without requiring additional cabling or electrical infrastructure. Thirdly, each reefer tag is connected to the system independently, so a single tag failure or problem at one container does not affect other containers.

Reefer monitoring is a growth market, and Galvis said IDENTEC has additional projects in the pipeline, including an installation at a terminal on the US East Coast. As well as automating the monitoring process, he added, terminals are looking for autoamted accesss to the reefer data now required for regulatory compliance in the US, and CTAS can provide a download of the trip data that is needed.

IDENTEC’s customers are also aware of the growing interest in measuring power consumption across the whole cold chain, and generating data on the energy usage of different brand reefers in particular. IDENTEC has recently added energy measuring software to CTAS and is continuing to improve the accuracy of the system with different brand reefers.
