Kenya's SGR set to open

China Communications Construction Company has completed the first three berths at the new port of Lamu in Kenya, and the focus has turned to securing cargo handling equipment and developing road connections.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has issued tenders for four laden handling reach stackers and four empty container handling reach stackers.

Kenya’s Departmental Committee on Transport, Public Works and Housing has released its report on its inquiry into the use of Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The port of Mombasa in Kenya handled more than 1.4M TEU in 2019, a record performance and an increase of more than 7% on 2018’s throughput of 1.3M TEU. 

South Africa’s Transnet SOC is in discussions with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to operate the first phase of the new port of Lamu.

The new port of Lamu, which is being developed in northern Kenya and is at the heart of the country’s Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport
(LAPSSET) corridor project, is at least six months behind schedule.
