Mexico’s DINA is supplying 33 electric terminal tractors for SSA Terminals in Long Beach.
DINA, the former state-owned Diesel Nacional SA, today produces heavy duty trucks, buses and speciality vehicles in Mexico. Its line up includes a “Hustler”, or terminal tractor.
DINA has now exported Hustlers to the USA, tweeting a picture of a machine at an SSA Terminals’ facility in the US this month. It transpires that the 33 electric yard tractors heading to SSA Terminals Pier C in Long Beach as part of the Sustainable Terminals Advancing Regional Transformation (START) zero-emissions project will be supplied by DINA, with drive systems from TransPower. The equipment is being partly funded through a grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) under its Zero and Near-Zero Emissions Freight Facility funding program (ZANZEFF).
The push for zero emissions equipment (and the grant funding supporting that effort) continues to open up opportunities for new equipment and drive train suppliers in California. Another pilot project to test two electric tractors at LBCT in Long Beach features a CNHTC/Sinotruk Hova tractor with a fuel cell system from Canada’s Loop Energy, and hydrogen supplied by Air Products. The other machine is a Kalmar electric T2 tractor with TransPower’s drive system.
