MOL takes a bow

Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd has announced that DNV GL has issued an Approval In Principle (AIP) to MOL and Samsung Heavy Industries for their Bow Wind Shield designed for ultra-large container carriers

MOL takes a bow

This newly developed Bow Wind-Shield reduces the wind resistance on hull body of while the ship is running, and is expected to reduce CO2E by 2-4% in a ULCC application. It is based on technology from both MOL and SHI.

MOL developed and installed the bow wind shield on an existing middle-size containership in 2015 and confirmed a CO2E reduction of around 2% in real-running conditions two years later.


SHI also has developed a bow wind shield for a ULCC. Introducing both companies’ technology, MOL and SHI started a joint development project for the optimal Bow Wind-Shield design for ULCCs and the technology has now been certified as AIP from DNV GL.

 

MOL says it is continually driving ahead with its "ISHIN NEXT smart ship programme.
