24/7 automated customs clearance in Dunkirk

Following a request by DSV, customs declarations can be made round-the-clock every day of the week in the Port of Dunkirk

The Dunkirk Region customs authority has authorised 24/7 customs clearance in the Port of Dunkirk. 3PL services provider DSV, which made the original request for this facility, has been testing the automated clearance service since 15th November.

 

Until now, it has been possible to clear customs outside normal customs working hours, but only if the company involved was physically present. Under the new set-up, goods can be cleared automatically outside these hours.

 

Stéphane Raison, the port’s CEO, said: "24/7 clearance will allow us to accelerate movement of containers through the port. Container moves can be timed to fit in with ships operating during the night and at weekends, in accordance with customer demand."

 

Other than any containers on chassis shipped by ro-ro, Dunkirk handles only deepsea containers today and many of these may require clearance.

 

However, is DSV anticipating possible future shortsea lo-lo services over Dunkirk in the event of post-Brexit friction in the accompanied transport Dover-Calais and Getlink shuttle model? Some time ago DSV announced that it would broaden its offer for UK companies trading with the Continent to include unaccompanied transports.
