Multimodal transport and inland terminal operator Contargo says its first automated terminal will be ready by 2023

Contargo plans "automated terminals"

Jürgen Albersmann, Joint Managing Director (JMD) of Contargo, which is part of the Rhenus Group, made this announcement during last week’s Transport Logistics trade fair in Munich, Germany.


Mr Albersmann did not identify the location, or whether it would be a rail/road combi-terminal or a trimodal terminal with barge access.

He simply noted that automated terminals already exist in several sea ports, with cranes operated by remote control and AGVs used for transporting containers without any human intervention, but no such developments have been made in the hinterland.


Heinrich Kerstgens, JMD, added that official permits will have to be obtained from respective governmental authorities.


Contargo operates 24 terminals in Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands, obviously mostly located along the Rhine corridor. Its modal split is currently inland vessel 73%, rail 21% and road 6%.
