More reefer monitoring deals for Orbcomm

Orbcomm has provided more information on a reefer monitoring system Carrier Transicold is supplying to a major shipping line. Neither Carrier nor Orbcomm have identified the shipping line at this stage, but Orbcomm has disclosed it is a major global carrier with a fleet of 150,000 units, which matches the size of the ONE reefer fleet.

Orbcomm CEO and President Marc Eisenberg said the global deployment will include “our expertise to help create Carrier’s customer-specific refrigerated container monitoring and control solutions”. Orbcomm anticipates it will have shipped 21,000 of the container devices by the end of this year, and the project will be completed in 2021. The customer is planning to go live with the project in Q4 this year.

Orbcomm also reports it is pursuing another reefer monitoring opportunity with a company Eisenberg described as “a producer and distributor of produce who operate their own private fleet of ships and containers.” The project includes deployment on some 15,000 to 20,000 assets, some of which have controlled atmosphere systems, and a vessel monitoring solution on five vessels.

The contract will be on a subscription basis, where all the hardware, connectivity and software are bundled into one monthly price over a fixed period, typically five years. This will change Orbcomm’s revenue flow from a fixed price for hardware plus service revenues to a more consistent service revenue stream over the life of the contract.

Orbcomm is planning to announce the customer at the Intermodal Europe Exhibition this week. From the profile outlined above it looks like Chiquita, which recently started a new dedicated service carrying its bananas from Central America to Europe in reefer containers using five new vessels.
