The Port of Kiel’s train formation station at Meimersdorf is now prepared for 740m long trains, helping to build on the port’s existing niche as a marine gate for Scandinavia-Germany/southern European multimodal traffic flows

Up to now Meimersdorf has been limited to train lengths of 535m, but 740m long trains can now enter and leave. The picture left, from the inauguration ceremony on 7th November shows (L to R): Hafen Kiel’s Managing Director, Dr Dirk Claus; DB AG’s for the region, Manuela Herbort; and Kiel’s Lord Mayor, Dr Ulf Kämpfer.

“The Meimersdorf shunting station is of major importance for the growing rate of rail traffic from and to the seaport of Kiel," said Dr Claus. "The new entry track enables the management of longer trains as of now and thus strengthens our competitive position for hinterland railway transport.”

The port of Kiel is forecasting no less than 25% growth in rail-ro traffic in 2020!! In addition to Kombiverkehr’s existing domestic and international connections, Luxembourg’s CFL Cargo will start a 670m long train service between the port and its intermodal rail hub in Bettembourg, opening avenues for Scandinavia-France/Iberia flows.

Kiel-Meimersdorf is one of 17 projects in Germany realised by DB as part of the German federal government’s “Seaport Hinterland Transport II programme."

Specifically, track No.9 at Meimersdorf has been redesigned and optimised in terms of length and signal and control technology. The track has been electrified and connected directly to Kiel Ostuferhafen. Project cost was €7.9M.

Dr Claus said: “The intermodal train service from Hamburg-Billwerder arrives every working day as well as the direct trains from Italy. The trains are split in Meimersdorf and then go on to our Schwedenkai, Norwegenkai and Ostuferhafen terminals to get a direct connection to the ferries to Scandinavia and to the Baltic States. In addition, block trains, chartered trains, wagon groups and wagonload freight are accepted."
