Rated capacity, on build-out, of the Tikhvin plant in Russia’s Leningrad region is estimated at 10,000 railcars a year.
A solid bottom gondola car, a universal bottom discharge gondola and a hopper car for mineral fertilisers were designed on the basis of the 18-9810 Barber Bogie and produced at Tikhvin’s prototype workshop.
The Barber car is the most widespread model in the USA, where it holds 75% of the market, and is also widely used in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, China and in some states of North and Central Africa.
“In contrast to the native 18-100 bogie, which is installed on the majority of freight cars in Russia and the CIS, the 18-9810 bogie, produced at our plant provides all up-to-date engineering solutions,” said Alexey Aleshin, director general of the Tikhvin management company.
The estimated “between repairs” distance of Bogie 18-9810 is up to 500,000 kms, and for some design elements as much as 1M kms, compared to a maximum of 200,000 kms for the 18-100. Apart from lower M&R costs, the new Tikhvin bogie will also improve the dynamic behaviour of the car.
According to Russian rail research organization OAO NVC Vagony, the life span cost of the Barber bogie is 24% lower than most existing Russian alternatives.
The car carrier design was developed by Standard Car Truck Company (USA), a member of the Wabtec Corporation and the bodies of the hopper and solid bottom gondola were designed by Starfire.
