People on the move – surprise change of CEO at Konecranes

ECSA (the European Community Shipowners’ Association) has elected Claes Berglund (pictured left) as its new president at its general assembly held recently in Athens. Philippos Philis was chosen as the new Vice President. Berglund, who is director of public affairs and sustainability at Stena AB, will be in office for two years. Berglund was Vice President at ECSA during the last two years and replaces Panos Laskaridis as president.


In a move that took Finnish industry by surprise, Dr Rob Smith has been appointed President and CEO of Konecranes effective February 1, 2020, replacing Panu Routila, who has left the company without a handover. Konecranes’ CFO and Deputy CEO Teo Ottola will act as interim CEO until Rob Smith starts in the position.


In a Stock Exchange statement, Konecranes’ Chairman of the Board Christoph Vitzthum thanked Routila for his "successful leadership of the company through a major transition on the company’s growth path," with specific reference to the MHPS acquisition that took place almost three years ago, adding that the "integration has noe been completed…and the company is now ready for the next phase in its development."

Smith, who holds US and German dual citizenship, joins Konecranes from AGCO Corporation, where his latest position has been Senior Vice President & General Manager, Europe and Middle East. Prior to this, he has worked in business leadership roles in TRW Automotive, Tyco Electronics and Bombardier Transportation, among others.

In its statement, Konecranes also announced that it has postponed its Capital Markets Day, scheduled for November 21, 2019, in London. "A new date will be communicated in due course after the new CEO has started in his position."


Aki Vesikallio has been appointed Investor Relations Director of Cargotec (Kalmar, MacGregor, Hiab brands) as of 2 December 2019. He joins Cargotec from Outokumpu, where he was also Investor Relations Manager. He will report to Hanna-Maria Heikkinen, VP, Investor Relations.


Oslo-based Stolt Tankers has appointed Lucas Vos as its new president, replacing Mark Martecchini, who will remain head of the shipowning division and be responsible for Stolt Tankers’ business transformation programme. Vos started his career with P&O Nedlloyd and from 2008-13 was CCO of Maersk Line. For the past few years he was CEO of FloraHolland.


Ole Ingrisch, the former Port Director of The Port of Esbjerg is joining another Danish port, Aabenraa. Ingrisch left his position in Esbjerg , the second largest Danish port, after 16 years in February. He will now assist the port of Aabenraa to improve its infrastructure and market position.

New Jersey, US-based power generation equipment specialist Power Pool Plus has announced two recent additions to its team. Adam Hulse has joined the management team as Vice President of Sales. Hulse was previously Sales manager for international territories for Taylor Machine Works International, an independent company that was recently acquired by the Taylor Group of Companies.


“As Vice President of Sales, Adam will be responsible for overseeing the development of new business relationships, promoting the company’s reefer generator products and services across all market segments, and championing the newest generator technologies and innovations in an effort to increase efficiency and profitability for Power Pool Plus customers,” the company stated.


Joining Adam Hulse at Power Pool Plus is Alberto Castillo as Regional Sales Manager, Latin America. A Mechanical Engineer, Castro recently represented Taylor Machine Works International as Regional Sales Manager, Mexico, and the Mexican equipment distributor SITSA in Mexico City as Sales Representative for Kalmar equipment and terminal tractors.


ONE SEA, the industry alliance whose primary aim is to lead the way towards an operating autonomous maritime ecosystem by 2025, has appointed Riku-Pekka Hägg as Chairman of its Management Board. Hägg will retain his current role as Vice President, Ship Design and Integrated Solutions Sales at Wärtsilä.
