Port dues frozen in South Africa

ICTSI has beat out competition from eight other global terminal operators to emerge as the preferred bidder for a 25-year concession to operate DCT Pier 2 in Durban, South Africa.

South Africa’s state-owned transport utility Transnet has submitted a Request for Information on the design and construction of a dedicated container terminal at Richards Bay.

Floods have caused major loss of life and damage to infrastructure and equipment in Durban.

After almost five years of debate and disagreement, South Africa’s Transnet is now offering private-sector operators the option of bidding to provide services on two key rail routes in competition with the parastatal’s own rail offering. The new rules on third-party operators were laid out in the 2017 National Rail Policy.

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) was forced to declare force majeure at Cape Town Container Terminal for three days in late December as a result of a sustained power cut over large parts of the city.

Structural reforms announced by state president Cyril Ramaphosa in June 2021 are unlikely to be fully implemented before mid-2023.
