Transhipment cargo, dry and liquid bulk and container traffic all recorded gains at Rotterdam in Q1.
Cargo statistics from the Port of Rotterdam for Q1 show healthy increases in the port’s main cargoes.
By tonnage, cargo transhipment increased to 123.8 Mt in Q1 2019 (+5.1% year-on-year), dry bulk recorded 19.4 Mt (+3.7%), and liquid bulk increased to 58.5 Mt (+4.6%), mostly due to an increase in crude oil to 28 Mt (+10.4%).
In total 38 Mt of containerised cargo was handled (+5.9%), which equated to 3.725M TEU (+7.3%).
Breakbulk totalled 7.9 Mt (+9.2%), thanks to a 10.5% pre Brexit-driven growth of ro ro business in the first quarter to 6.4 Mt. The Rotterdam port authority anticipates the whole-year result to be slightly over the 469 Mt achieved in 2018.
