For the first time in its 22-year history, the Hams Hall intermodal rail terminal in the West Midlands of England will be taking non-Scandinavian origin train and truck (un)loading equipment
Cooper Specialised Handling Ltd, one of the UK’s leading independent dedicated port equipment suppliers, has confirmed it has received a supply order from Associated British Ports (ABP) for an order of two Sany SRSC 4540 reach stackers for operation at Hams Hall Rail Freight Terminal, Sutton Coldfield.
The second row 40 tonne capacity allows for fully laden container handling on the second rail at 5.3m load centre.
The facility regularly handles six rail services every day and runs a core fleet of eight reach stackers to service the trains on first and second rail tracks, as well as road trucks.
In a highly significant move, the contract for supply of the Sany machines represents the first time the terminal has not specified Scandinavian-sourced equipment since it started operation 22 years ago. The rail terminal, which serves a logistics park on the site of a former power station, was operated by Parsec Europe for five years from 1997 and ABP took over the operating leases in 2002. It was originally operated with Kalmar reach stackers, and then with Konecranes Lift Trucks’ machines.
The Sany machines, expected to enter service in early 2019, are highly specified with many standard features included within the scope of supply which otherwise would have been priced as extra, stated David Cooper. They will be equipped with Sany’s ‘intelligent’ jacking system as well as a 5-year structural warranty for the complete machine.
The new machines are expected to replace the oldest two reach stackers in the existing fleet. All the equipment, including Konecranes as well as the Sany reach stackers, is maintained by Cooper’s dedicated support Company, Cooper Handling Solutions Ltd, in a deal going back to when Cooper was Konecranes Lift Trucks’ exclusive British Isles representative.
