Shortsea moves in Europe...

Samskip is to launch a service connecting Norway with the Baltic States. The first sailing is scheduled for 16th August and the rotation will be Hamburg, Cuxhaven, Gdansk, Klaipeda, Oslo, Aarhus, Tanager/Bergen, Holla, Ålesund and Måløy.


The fortnightly service will be operated with 2 x 220 TEU container vessels, each with 85 reefer plugs. Primary cargoes include frozen seafood to Baltic destinations and consumer goods to Norway.


“Customers who demand reliable transit times between the Baltic,Poland and Norway, will be well-served by our new complementary product connecting Norwegian and Baltic ports," stated Samskip.

Also starting in August, Unifeeder will upgrade its services linking Sweden, Poland, Germany, Russia and the UK to eight weekly sailings in each direction.


"Along with inland opportunities," says the operator, "the upgrade will facilitate new routing options for Swedish exporters to reach the global markets in a reliable, cost-efficient and climate-smart manner, in services that combine both feeder and shortsea operations."


As both Samskip and Unifeeder point out, 45ft palletwide, HC containers can take 32% more pallets than a standard ISO 40ft unit, or exactly the same amount of cargo as a 13.6m trailer, with the added advantage of easy modal switching.


Unifeeder faces strong competition on Scandinavia-Germany-Italy-Central Europe routes from ro-rail services with the rail operators able to cater for non-cranable trailers using techniques such as NiKrasa.
