In the first nine months of 2018, the Port of Colombo witnessed its highest ever growth in transhipment container traffic, with numbers up by 19.4% year-on-year to 4.207M TEU
The figures, which build on the impressive H1 2018 numbers for transhipment containers, seem to reflect the better conditions for carriers following the conclusion of the common berthing deal between the various terminal operators in March.
The latest figures were revealed by state-owned Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), operated by Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). JCT handled 1,445,424 TEU in transhipment in Q1-Q3 2018, up 23.3% on the 1,172,542 TEU it handled in the same period in 2017.
SLPA says that it expects the Port of Colombo to handle 7M TEU in calendar 2018.
