Local operator Controladora y Operadora de Terminales SA de CV (COTSA) has won the concession to develop and operate container handling facilities at the Mexican Pacific coast port of Lazaro Cardenas. The initial lease term is for 30 years with options for ten year extensions.

COTSA, which already operates the container terminal at the Port of Altamira on the Mexican Gulf, outbid both Hutchison Port Holdings and P&O Ports to win the deal for Lazaro Cardenas, which is slated to become the largest container port on the Mexican Pacific coast, with a handling capacity of over 1 mill TEU/per year. Virtually no containers at all have been handled at the port over the past five years.
