India’s Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) has drawn up plans to spend nearly Rs1.5 bill (US$32.6 mill) to improve and upgrade container handling facilities at Haldia Dock, said M L Meena, deputy chairman of KoPT.

Included on the shopping list are two new ship-to-shore cranes and three RTGs, while Rs100 mill (US$2.2 mill) will be spent on other types of equipment for the container yard. In the year to March 2003, Haldia handled 117,000 TEU. This year’s throughput is expected to rise marginally to 120,000 TEU.
