The collapse of Latin America’s fourth largest economy, Venezuela, has had a dramatic impact on container ports in neighbouring Colombia, Trinidad and the Dutch Antilles

Despite container operators nearby posting strong increases in volumes during a two-month strike in Venezuela last December and January, the real impact of the ongoing economic difficulties being felt in the oil-rich country are only now beginning to emerge. Venezuela’s GDP is set to shrink by between 12 and 18 percent this year, depending on whose figures you believe, as the country’s purchasing power has been restricted by currency controls.
