More information has been released on the proposed container barge service between Oakland and the struggling river port of Sacramento (see WorldCargo News September 2005 p26).
The Port of Oakland and the inland port are discussing a strategic alliance that will involve Oakland taking a management rôle in the inland port and the introduction of barge services on the River Sacramento to relieve highway congestion. As previously noted, the river port is suffering a reduction in bulk calls due to restricted draught, but a container barge operation requires no dredging and has popular support as a highway decongestant.
