Hong Kong losing out to lower cost competition

SAR Hong Kong’s throughput in the six months of this year rose 6.6% to 11.4M TEU, of which the nine container terminals handled 7.41M TEU, up 8.4% year on year. June volumes rose just 3.8% year on year to 2M TEU, down from 12.5% in May, with the sluggish growth attributed to a decline in river terminal and mid-stream traffic and growing competition from Shenzhen terminals. River terminal and mid-stream throughput declined 3.4% in the six months to 4M TEU, while their June volumes were down 4.3%
