PTP eyes Phase 3

News-in-print

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is moving ahead with its Phase 3 expansion plans, according to local news reports. The RM5B (US$1.1B) expansion will see three new 1.5 km berths built, one of which will be operational by 2018.

Muhammad Razif Ahmad, general manager of Johor Port Authority (JPA), was quoted as saying PTP’s yearly cargo volumes would grow from 10.5 Mt to 15 Mt when the project is completed in 2019.

“JPA and the management of PTP are always looking at how to further expand, develop and strengthen operations at the port from time to time,” he said. “Prospects for port operations in Johor are bright in the coming years, with the massive development taking place, especially in the southern-most part of the state.”

News of the expansion plans comes after PTP recently announced it had hit container volumes of 800,000 TEU for August. This is a new record for the port, which registered growth of 8.9% for the first eight months of this year compared to the same period in 2014.

“Positive improvements on productivity in container operations and better optimisation of resources were seen as the main reason behind this latest breakthrough,” said Glen Hilton, PTP CEO.

PTP, however, is benefitting significantly from the 2M alliance, which is bringing in substantial MSC volume that was previously handled in Singapore. It expects to achieve its target of 9.2M TEU for 2015, up from 8.5M TEU last year. The port was one of only three in the world to record doubledigit growth in 2014. Current capacity is 10.5M TEU.
