Demand for containers softens and prices for newbuilds ease back

Container manufacturers in China are reporting falling demand for new boxes, and prices have been cut as a consequence. In the first four months of 2022, an estimated 1.24M TEU of dry freight boxes and 106,000 TEU of reefer containers were delivered, down 33% and more than 37%, respectively, on the same period in 2021. For the full year, London-based maritime research group Drewry is expecting global production to total 4.5M TEU. This would be down 37% on the 7.13M built in 2021.
