The Nigerian government has begun to implement a new law which aims to reserve all coastal shipping work for Nigerian companies.
Under the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act 2003, only vessels registered in Nigeria and owned by Nigerians may “engage in the domestic coastal carriage of cargo and passengers within the coastal, territorial inland waters, island or any point within the waters of the exclusive economic zone of Nigeria.”
