As previously reported (WorldCargo News, June 2015, p5), SafeRoll is aimed at increasing the safety of ro-ro tractors hauling heavy cassette loads up or down angled ramps, through a low connection point of the gooseneck to the tractor’s fifth wheel, which would also be in the lowered position. This ensures that the load is more evenly distributed over the front and rear tractor axles.

The LTH90 SafeRoll Combi Translifter was launched by TTS Liftec in April 2016 at a demonstration in the Port of Hanko on a Transfennica vessel, and the first two units delivered are operated in Hanko and Rauma (WorldCargo News, April 2016, p25).

A feature of the SafeRoll Combi is its ability to lift and move SECU cassettes and standard cassettes. Its steady manoeuvrability reduces the risk of human error while increasing work safety, said TTS Liftec’s project manager Mika Vallius. The cassette/translifter system itself has been around for many years in ro-ro, and significantly reduces vessel turnaround time.

Separately, another TTS company, TTS Marine AB in Gothenburg, has developed the Intelligent Movable Deck Lifter (IMDL) to reduce wasted garage space inside PCTCs. The patent-pending IMDL is a drivable vehicle, compact and lowbuilt for minimum storage. It is equipped with dual frame scissor lift and with swing-out arms and telescopic extensions.
