It is somewhat ironic that mobile port plant engines must comply with increasingly stringent emission controls. The equipment generates considerably less emissions than the ships moored alongside.

One ship’s diesel generator is probably at least ten times more harmful than a terminal tractor. It normally runs on heavy fuel oil with a high heavy metal content and discharges its untreated exhaust gases high above the quayside where they will be distributed over a greater area.
