For the first time ever, Chile’s Port of Arica handled less cargo last year than Matarani, its near neighbour and competitor in southern Peru. While Matarani’s throughput rose 11 per cent to 1.428 mt, Arica’s fell by 22.5 per cent to 1.016 mt. Throughput at the other north Chilean ports, Iquique and Antofagasta, rose by 3 per cent and 9 per cent respectively.
