Dutch rail infrastructure operator ProRail has announced plans to allow automated train operations on the Betuwe dedicated freight line, on a test basis

Holland’s new Betuwe Route is finally set to open next January, initially for trials. A “last minute” compromise had to be agreed with tunnel constructors GTI and Imtech last month to maintain this already delayed schedule, but the extra €10M agreed does not add much to the overall €4.9BB price tag.

The Port of Rotterdam and ProRail, the sole Dutch rail network administrator (formed from the merger of ProRail, RIB and Railned in 2003) have been awarded a temporary concession by the Dutch government to manage the Betuwe line for 3-5 years after it opens in 2007.
