Green light for new Tanzanian port

The Tanzanian government has confirmed that a new port will be built at Mbegani, about 60 km north of Dar es Salaam next to the town of Bagamoyo. The project was first mooted in 2007, but speaking at a political rally in Bagamoyo in the run-up to the country’s 31 October elections, President Jakaya Kikwete announced that the government had now decided to press ahead with developing the new facility to reduce congestion at the country’s main port, Dar es Salaam.
