Sohar capacity to be expanded

Automation and remote control are currently the two major trends in the crane control sector, and suppliers are responding to this.

Oman’s northern port of Sohar is set to become a much bigger container port, with work expected to commence in 2019 on increasing its container handling capacity to 6M TEU a year.

The port of Sohar in northern Oman reported a more than 58% rise in its container traffic last year, handling a total of 330,663 TEU.

Sohar Industrial Port, in which the Port of Rotterdam Authority has an interest, is planning to develop an additional container terminal with the capacity to handle an estimated 3.5M TEU/year, raising the port’s design throughput to approximately 5M TEU.

Even through the global downturn, the middle east achieved stable growth rates and the region continues to perform well, with growing demand for port capacity.
