The government of Turkmenistan has contracted Italy’s RINA to supervise expansion of its only (Caspian) sea port of Turkmenbashi. The project is aimed at more than doubling capacity to around 25 Mtpa, boosting capital investment in the region and giving the country an alternative to Russian transit for exports of its vast energy resources, estimated at 12 Bt, and other major commodities such as cotton to Europe and the Middle East.
