Lidl UK to establish distribution operations at DP World London Gateway Logistics Park.

Germany-based European supermarket chain Lidl is the fast-growing grocer in the UK having, like its compatriot Aldi, shaken the established set-up with aggressive discounting.

Lidl UK will begin operating out of the 187,000 ft2 (17,383 M2) London Gateway Logistics Centre from February next year, to support its 640-strong network of UK stores.

Lidl will occupy the warehouse areas of the Logistics Centre, which became vacant earlier this year.

Adrienne Howells, Lidl’s Head of Warehouse Expansion, said: “As we push forward with our UK expansion plans we continue to strengthen our core infrastructure in order to support our new and existing stores up and down the country. We are, therefore, pleased to have found a viable facility at DP World London Gateway Logistics Park that meets our current distribution requirements.”

Earlier this year Lidl revealed plans to build a new distribution centre in Devon, in the south west of England. The supermarket chain bought the site near Exeter airport from Sainsbury’s after the latter cancelled ed its own plans for a depot.
