Port Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), which is Malaysia’s largest container transhipment hub, has set a new handling record.
In a recent single 12-hour shift, the port recorded 13,700 quayside moves, up just over 9% on PTP’s previous record of 12,557 moves posted in 2020. PTP also set a new hourly record of 1,308 quayside moves in a single hour.
Marco Neelsen, CEO of PTP, attributed the latest performance to PTP’s strategic approach in continuously enhancing its efficiency, optimising its footprint and ensuring it has a competitive advantage over its rivals. He said: “Our concerted efforts to grow is accompanied by significant emphasis on our port asset upgrades and infrastructure works aligned with our environmental social and governance agenda and digital strategy roadmap.”
When it comes to adopting digital processes, using AI and machine learning techniques, PTP is one of the leaders in the global port industry and it has a firm commitment to develop this further. Over the next five years, about MAR3B will be spent to upgrade PTP’s current terminal footprint and increase and improve its automation and digital systems.
Training programmes and staff motivation are, though, essential in setting records like this as Neelsen acknowledged. “This achievement is not possible without the outstanding dedication and commitment from everyone to set up the right and sustainable business conditions to our day-to-day operations and focus in delivering best customer services to all stakeholders,” he said.
In 2022, PTP, which is managed by APM Terminals, handled 10.5M TEU which was down just over 6% on the 11.2M TEU handled in 2021.
