Battery-powered barge for sand transport in Stockholm region

News

Avatar Logistics and Sand & Grus AB Jehander have joined forces to develop a battery-electric barge for shipping sand and gravel in the Stockholm region

The existing barge used by Sand & Grus AB Jehander, JEHANDER I, which was built in Finland in 1970, will be replaced by a new barge, which will be delivered in 2024.

The new vessel will be build in accordance with EU regulations for inland vessels by Ferus Smit BV shipyard in the Netherlands.

Apart from the power features, with recharging at berths, the vessel will have twice the capacity as the existing barge. JEHANDER I transports around 300,000 tpa from quarries in Lake Mälaren, so the new one is capable of making big inroads into truck transports to and from building sites in the Greater Stockholm area. The vessel will be 75m long with a beam of 8.50m and can transport 1,420 tons of materials in six holds.

Avatar Logistics is a subsidiary company of Erik Thun AB, while Sand & Grus AB Jehander is part of the Heidelberg Cement Group .
