ARTCO replaces 4-rope drives

In-Depth

Over the years, Gottwald has been very successful in supplying pontoon-mounted cranes for bulk cargo lightering and mid-stream barge-to-ship operations on the Lower Mississippi River.

One customer, American River Transportation Co (ARTCO), an affiliate of the ADM food group, took delivery of seven G5 cranes between 2008 and 2019 – three G 6400 Bs and four G HPK 8400 Bs. Together these cranes handle about 1 Mt of cargo each month. Last year the first G HPK 8400 B delivered to ARTCO became the first-ever Gottwald 4-rope crane to have a new drive retrofitted.

“Because this retrofit replaced a DC drive that was no longer available, the life of the crane will be extended for 10-15 years by ensuring  continuing spare parts are available,” explained Konecranes Gottwald. With the demands of operating 24/7, the cranes need frequent maintenance, but the original electrical components are becoming harder to obtain.

The new drive replaced the DC drives for hoisting and slewing as well as for the variable braking resistor, plus one additional control unit for the 4-rope configuration. A new onboard computer (IPC) was also installed, with VISUMATIC 8 software, along with a new monitor, keyboard, mouse and UPS for the electrical control room, and in readiness to link  the crane to Konecranes Truconnect remote digital services. Over time, ARTCO plans to retrofit all its Konecranes Gottwald cranes as they age.
