The promoters of the 1400 km long Saudi double-stack intermodal rail landbridge project, to connect Jeddah with Dammam and Jubail via Riyadh, say it could transform shipping economics in the Middle East. Carriers would be able to shave five and even seven days (if transhipment is currently used) off Europe-Far East transit times via Suez and reduce the number of vessels in their strings accordingly.
