Domestic Italian RoLa service

For the first time a rolling highway service has been introduced within Italy

RoLa is classically a transalpine solution and there are routes via the Brenner and Gotthard through Austria and Switzerland respectively into southern Germany.

The new domestic service, which links Gorizia in the north east with Ospitaletto near Brescia, has been launched by Alpe Adria SpA, in collaboration with Trenitalia (the haulage contractor) and SDAG SpA, which manages the intermodal terminals at both ends.

There is one overnight departure each way on Mondays through Thursdays, with a separate cabin for the truck drivers, in classic RoLa style. The train can accommodate 19 HGVs on ultra-low Saadkms wagons.

The initiative will help decongest the A4 Trieste-Venezia-Padova-Brescia motorway axis and could form the basis for a future connection between the Pianura Padana and Eastern Europe.

The inaugural departure from Gorizia took place in thick fog – a reminder that the much-maligned RoLa concept can serve a useful social purpose in improving safety for general road users.
