CMA CGM and GTS Logistic establish the European Container Network

French multinational logistics firm CMA CGM and Italian intermodal provider GTS General Transport Service have unveiled their collaboration through the establishment of a new joint venture.

This venture, dubbed the European Container Network, aims to revolutionize logistics and transportation services across Europe and Italy by offering reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly solutions.

By leveraging the combined expertise and resources of both entities, the European Container Network will introduce innovative and sustainable transportation options to businesses utilizing containerized services in Italy and beyond.

“We are thrilled to start this journey with CMA CGM. Together, our skills in intermodal rail transportation and CMA CGM’s shipping and logistics know-how will enable us to develop a seamless, long-lasting solution that satisfies our clients’ changing needs,” Alessio Muciaccia, CEO of GTS  commented.

“We see tremendous potential in this partnership with GTS.” By working together, we can open up new doors for all of JV’s clients and provide them with cutting-edge, low-carbon rail options should they choose to transition,” Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President, Assets and Operations, CMA CGM added.

The partnership will facilitate seamless door-to-door transportation services across the entire market, enhancing efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. This will be achieved by harnessing GTS’s extensive assets, expertise, and network spanning Italy and expanding across European borders, in conjunction with CMA CGM’s global shipping capabilities.

At the core of the joint venture’s mission are objectives to broaden multimodal transportation choices, optimize supply chain operations, and drive innovation within the transportation sector. Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, the partnership will prioritize eco-friendly practices and technology to minimize their environmental footprint.

Established in 1977, GTS boasts a fleet of 34 locomotives (expected to grow to 48 by 2025), 650 rail wagons, 3,600 containers, and operates 19 domestic and international terminals. Notably, the company handles over 118 weekly trains and facilitates more than 166,000 shipments annually.
