How much money do insurers pay out for container losses and damage? The claims experience of the UK P&I Club, which, with Norway’s Gard Club, tops the mutual insurer league table, is a bellwether for the Clubs and commercial insurers. The Club recently surveyed its files for large claims during the 1987-2007 period and found 776 claims valued in total at US$372M, or an average of 39 claims at US$18.6M a year. Containerships account for some 12% of club entries for P&I.
