Rail automation live in Australia
NewsQube commenced “normal automated operations” at the import/export terminal (IMEX) of the new Moorebank rail facility near Sydney in May and June this year.
Part of the marshalling yard in the north of the city will be converted into a new combined transport terminal by DB
The existing Munich Reim terminal is operating near capacity of around 350,000 intermodal units (UTI) a year. More capacity is needed in the Munich area and to support DB’s goal of increasing rail market share of German cargo transport from 18% to 25% by 2030.
The plans for the new terminal were presented by Klaus-Dieter Josel, Managing Director of DB AG Bavaria, together with the Bavarian Minister for Transport, Christian Bernreiter, and Andreas Witzel, Major Projects Manager, DB Netz AG.
The new terminal will occupy 180,000 m2 and will comprise four train length (un)loading tracks, two truck lanes and four container stacks worked between the legs of up to six widespan RMGs, to provide an installed annual capacity of 300,000 UTI. The terminal will be located directly on the Scan-Med corridor, so is seen as an important component for more modal shift on transalpine flows.
No detailed costings have been provided as DB has just started the preliminary planning phase, which will last until 2024. With further planning phases and the approvals process, construction is not expected to start until 2028, with commissioning in 2031.
The site is close to the A99 motorway, but a new access road would also need to be built.
