Globalstar has launched SmartOne Solar, the next generation of its SmartOne product line. Incorporating solar power means the device now provides remote monitoring and tracking capability, while being maintenance-free for 8+ years, the company claims.

The SmartOne solar device is small, measuring 7 x 3.25 inches, with a depth of just 1.125 inches. Weight is 13.5 Oz (385g). The battery unit is a rechargeable NiMH unit. It is charged by the solar cell, but can keep operating for “many months” without needing exposure to sunlight, said Globalstar. The solar component of the device was developed by Carmanah Technologies Corporation.

Globalstar is marketing SmartOne Solar as a “low-energy, low-maintenance monitoring solution with ubiquitous satellite coverage that could transform the global supply chain”. For container tracking applications, the company told WorldCargo News that it recommends the device be placed on a side of a container (not the top), to maximise opportunities for sunlight exposure.

The cost of satellite data remains a concern for applications like container tracking. Globalstar said SmartOne will address this issue. “There is an exponential growth in M2M markets worldwide, fuelled by demand for affordable, reliable IoT data solutions that help businesses monitor, manage and automate collection of data from remote assets,” said Jay Monroe, chairman and CEO of Globalstar.
