Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, announced plans to release the crew of the 15,000 TEU MSC Aries containership soon, following a call with his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel, emphasizing humanitarian concerns.

The vessel, leased by MSC from Gortal Shipping, was seized by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in the Strait of Hormuz on April 13 for alleged maritime law violations, amidst tensions with Israel.

Iran’s foreign ministry asserted the incident’s connection to Israel, particularly through Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer’s partial ownership of Zodiac Maritime, Gortal Shipping’s parent company.

The seizure came shortly after Tehran’s threat of retaliation against a suspected Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus, raising fears of disruptions to the vital shipping route.
