Container Corporation of India (Concor), which is the largest operator of container train services in India, and the regional government of the state of Andhra Pradesh have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up an integrated logistics and manufacturing zone in the city of Machilipatnam.
The MoU provides Concor with 1,000 acres of land, on which it is to develop a full range of facilities and infrastructure that will encourage assembly industries to establish a presence in the area, and at the same time, promote the wider use of multimodal transport services in the state. Meanwhile, in other moves Concor is continuing to expand its cool chain network. Recently, the company installed reefer plugs at its inland container depot (ICD) at Ajni, in response to growing demand from both importers and exporters using the facility.
Commenting on the investment, Anup Kumar Satpathy, chief general manager of the Ajni ICD, said: “The plug-in arrangement will boost exports of edible items from the region, and, once demand picks up, we may run a refrigerated train of 14 to 44 containers from Nagpur to JNPT port.” Currently, Concor has just six plug-in points available but, depending on demand, the number can be increased.
Concor controls over 70% of all containerised cargo that moves by rail in India, and, in addition to its 68 dedicated rail terminals, is involved in the development of 20 multimodal transport/logistics centres.
