Mixed bag in South America

Latin American economies grew more slowly last year than in 2000, probably no more than 0.5 per cent for the region as a whole compared to 4.1 percent according to UN-ECLAC estimates. The sharp fall in growth reflects, however, the particular problems in Argentina. The wider international economic slowdown of course also affected the region’s external trade. For this year, overall average growth rate is expected to be ca. 1 per cent, with a stronger performance concentrated in the second half.
