Transhipment in the Gulf area recorded strong growth in 2001 despite predictions of a steep fall in throughput post-911. Dubai underlined its status as the region’s leading port. Volumes surged by 14 percent to a record 3.5 mill TEU, with transhipment cargo rising unexpectedly by 16 percent to 1.49 mill TEU.
